Our Wernher Restaurant head chef Ruth Hansom has been mentoring 15-year old budding chef from Letchworth, Hilary, who has just won the East of England regional final of Springboard’s FutureChef competition.
Ruth, a former winner of the FutureChef competition, will now mentor Hilary Bexfield as she prepares to take on 11 other young chefs in the national final, in a bid to be crowned the FutureChef of 2019.
The FutureChef initiative gives school children, aged between 12 to 16 years, the skill, understanding and confidence to feel comfortable in the kitchen. Working directly with the national curriculum and at school level, young people who show an interest in becoming a chef are given the opportunity to learn in a supportive environment, alongside industry professionals.
Ruth, commented: “I’ve worked with the wonderful Springboard charity for many years now. The team has been so supportive in my journey as a chef, so it’s great to be able to give back and help the next generation further their skills. I’m really excited to assist Hilary in the last round of the competition and wish her all the best for the national finals!”
Ruth joined us as Wernher Restaurant head chef in 2018, after winning BBC 2’s Million Pound Menu. Using her culinary skill, vast experience and traditional techniques in the kitchen, Ruth has since made her innovative mark on the 2 AA-Rosette Wernher Restaurant’s fine-dining dishes.
