An introduction from the night's guest speaker, Bevan Newton Johnson

"I grew up around my father's table while he was working in the heart of the South African wine industry in Stellenbosch.  He regularly had tastings with friends that included Neil Ellis, Gyles Webb, Etienne le Riche, Kevin Arnold and others.

The first wine to capture my imagination was a bottle served by my father before leaving for my gap year, it was 1978 Chateau Cheval Blanc.  Upon returning home in 1996 my father and brother were setting up a winery together in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus. I was asked if I could help for a summer and never left.  We have now worked together for 14 years, planted 16 hectares of pinot noir, syrah, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. We have built a 250 ton gravity-fed winery on the slopes of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with views over Sandown Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.  My brother, Gordon is our winemaker alongside his wife, Nadia.  I work alongside of them taking care of sales and general management.

In 2012 we started our 5th harvest from our own estate, and have accomplished more than we dreamt of up until now, yet still feel there is a lifetime of learning and discovery ahead.  I live on the farm with my wife, Ezanne and our 6 year old son Kai."
